PERSPECTIVE

Start with the decision, not the method.

Research that earns its place.

The useful question

Before choosing interviews, a survey or a usability test, ask: what decision will this evidence change? A study can be rigorous and still leave a team stuck if nobody agrees on what happens after the findings.

Make uncertainty specific

Write down the decision, the people it affects and the assumption you are least confident about. Then ask what you already know. A focused review may expose a clear issue; speaking with customers may reveal why it happens. The method should earn its place.

Agree on the next move

Decide how you will use the findings before the work begins. What would support the current direction? What would make you change it? Keep those questions visible through synthesis. A useful deliverable connects observations to implications, trade-offs and a next step.

Keep the limits visible

Evidence reduces uncertainty; it rarely removes it. Explain who participated, what you observed and what you cannot conclude. A team can make a confident decision without pretending to know everything.
