Alcon OnePlanner / NorthStar

Unify the strongest parts of three planning products without carrying all of their complexity into the next one.

3 product historiesCapella, SMARTCataract and Unity informed the unified planning hypothesis.

AT A GLANCE

I led product research and experience strategy, translating clinical-user behaviour into product direction before architecture and interface decisions became expensive to change.

The challenge

Consolidation can reproduce complexity.

NorthStar was not a blank-sheet product. Capella, SMARTCataract and Unity carried useful patterns, workflows and historical decisions. The risk was that a technical consolidation would leave clinicians with an experientially fragmented planning process.

My role

Make workflow the unit of decision.

I partnered with Product, Design, Clinical, Research, Regulatory and technology stakeholders. Interviews and requirements workshops clarified product goals, legacy constraints, clinical needs and success measures before the team converged on a unified planning experience.

How we worked

Test structure before visual polish.

Early three-screen testing isolated navigation, information hierarchy and workflow expectations. Repeated click tests and usability evaluations brought recurring friction back into the design. Current and future clinical journeys connected what participants did to the context, handoffs and constraints around planning.

What changed

A lower-risk direction for the next product decisions.

The team could compare workflow options against observed clinical behaviour before deeper product investment. Research translated into guidance on sequence, orientation, information timing and cognitive load, organized in a prioritized 30/60/90-day roadmap.

What the evidence supports

Decision quality, not an unverified post-launch lift.

The strongest documented outcome is repeated validation of the evolving planner direction against clinical-user behaviour. The source archive does not preserve a project-specific post-launch KPI, so this case makes no conversion, safety or efficiency claim.

What this demonstrates

Resolve the workflow before polishing the interface.

This work shows clinical user research, workflow design and iterative product decisions in a high-consequence digital health context.
