Alcon SMARTCataract
Rebuild the product and the way the organization makes product decisions, across complex clinical work and multiple devices.
AT A GLANCE
I led product research and experience transformation across Alcon Digital Health, joining clinical discovery, product design, governance, team capability and measurement over an 18-month program.
The challenge
A clinical workflow problem, not a screen-polish problem.
SMARTCataract’s V1 beta exposed friction across surgical planning, dense data, roles, handoffs and time-sensitive decisions. The organization also needed a repeatable way to bring clinical evidence into future product decisions, rather than relying on a one-off redesign.
My role
Product, research and program leadership.
I led customer research and experience strategy, program planning, Key Performance Indicator (KPI) definition, governance, executive communication, training and adoption support. I managed an interdisciplinary global team of 36 across product, design, engineering, clinical, commercial and executive stakeholders.
How we worked
Understand the clinical system around the product.
Stakeholder interviews and requirements workshops surfaced business goals, clinical workflows, technology dependencies and risks. Research with surgeons, optometrists and clinical specialists informed personas and current and future journeys. We designed and tested workflows across desktop, tablet and surgical systems, while an 18-month roadmap and shared governance carried the evidence into delivery.
Build the product engine
Make evidence easier to use again.
I established a customer-centric product model linking research, prioritization, design, KPIs, decision rights and continuous improvement. A global advisory panel and faster recruitment made clinical input more reliable. Assisted synthesis shortened research cycles; interpretation and decisions stayed human-led.
Reported results
Faster evidence cycles, with operational context.
The project record reports approximately 80% lower research cycle time and resource effort, plus 35%+ improvement across research-led measures of efficiency, effectiveness and user satisfaction. These are reported project measures, not clinical or financial outcomes attributable to one interface change.
What this demonstrates
Improve the product and the system that produces it.
This case brings together global leadership, clinical workflow research, product strategy, research operations, governance and a reusable evidence model for a complex digital health product.
